Social Relationships - Staff training
Session #2 ~ Social Relationships
We want you guys to get to know each other and be a tight staff. However, this is a byproduct of camp, not one of the main goals. The main goals are for you to share the Gospel and to love your campers with Christ’s love (Matt 22:37-39).
• Staff huddles, hanging out when you should be with your campers, and staying up late outside of the cabin ……do not reach the goal of loving campers. Most of the friendship building happens on weekends, your hour off, and rubbing shoulders with staff in skills and meals.
However, community, building each other up, and praying with each other are good. It is important to stay fresh, excited, and energized for what you are doing out here. This summer will be hard, and you will need each other’s support to get through it (Galatians 6:2; 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31).
• So we understand… but examine your motives. Remember why you’re out here (1 Corinthians 11:28-32).
Girlfriends/Boyfriends
Basically, we screen staff so that the highest quality are here. This is why camp is full of quality people of the opposite sex. However, we ask that dating relationships are not pursued when your attention should be focused on your campers.
• Lots of good Christian guys and girls meet each other at camp and eventually get married. Relationships are not bad in due time, but they do take up a lot of time and energy, time and energy that you have committed to God and your campers.
Please think of your campers!
It is tempting to spend time with other staff; forming “camp memories & good relationships”. But it is possible to form good camp memories and relationships without shirking your duties or running away from your campers when they might need you. You never know when an opportunity to talk to your camper might come along and you don’t want to miss it because you were off somewhere instead of with your campers.
You only have one week with these kids, please focus all of your attention on them and do everything you can to show them the love that they might never see the rest of the year.
