Scorched Earth
Set up
Make two squares (10 to 20ft2) on either side of the field. These are each team’s tank.

Each team has a couple buckets of water, many sponge balls, and a water balloon launcher/catapult.

The catapult is the tank’s turret and must be on the tank. (Three people are required to shoot the turret.) The only other people allowed on/in the tank are the “armor”—two people to catch incoming fire.

Play
On “Go” each team starts shooting sponge balls from their tank—we often allow kids to take turns being the shooter. Leaders make great supports for the turret. All shots must go at least 20 feet in the air. (This prevents shots being b-lined across the field and hurting someone.) The best shots are usually 30 feet high at their peak.

Wet balls fly the best and get the catcher wetter.

The kids who are not part of the tank are trying to catch balls and retrieve them for their tank.

Points
Any ball caught out of the air is worth 20 points.
If a team hits the other tank they get 100 points.
If a team hits the other tank’s turret—the people included—they have killed that tank (and get 250 points if playing with three tanks or more.)
First team to 500 points wins.

Twists
- Team mates can go and try to catch balls launched at their opponent’s tank. Why? If it is clearly going to miss (and most shots do) then they can steal 20 points from the other team. (We usually let the leaders get a little rough with each other in this aspect of the game.)
- In keeping with the previous twist, those insurgents can steal sponge balls from the other team and throw them back to their team. Why? This will shorten the supply of ammunition for the other team. If done well enough, it can leave a tank defenseless. It also allows your tank to shoot like crazy. (Normally the tanks that fire quickly can run out of ammo, so we would send our kids out to steal ammo from the other teams. Any sponge balls in the buckets are out of bounds for stealing.)
- Instead of two tanks, play with three or four. This gives some interesting dynamics.
