Stix & Stones
This is our more popular game here at Roseau. Similar to "Capture the Flag". Great for a starter wide game. Great for all ages.
Time: 45-60 minutes
Materials:
-playing field
-flags or cones to determine boundaries and centre line
-various objects (2 each) (usually about ten objects)
ex:hockey sticks, soccer balls, basketballs, hockey pucks, broom ball sticks, putters, frisbees, golf balls, etc, etc.
Objective:
-be the first team to collect all objects in the playing field into your zone.
-if the game ended early, play a second time with more even teams.
Set Up:
-divide the playing field in two with a centre line. We use mini flags (they are visible from far).
-set up a zone (approx. 8x8 feet) at both ends of the playing field (again, we use flags).
-Put half of the objects in each zone.
-Split the group in two equal teams.
Gameplay:
-when the whistle blows, players need to make their way to the zone on their opposite side to retrieve the objects and bring them back.
-once a player is in the zone, he/she is safe from being tagged.
-when a player is tagged, he/she must sit at that spot until another player from their teams comes by and tags them. They both get a free walk back to their side.
-When a player is tagged with an object, he/she must sit down at that spot, and the object is then returned to its original zone.
-Objects can be thrown to other teammates, as long as the object does not touch the ground, otherwise, the object is returned. **Only objects with a throwable design can be thrown**
Rules:
-each player can only carry one object at a time.
-objects must be run across the centre line, not thrown over.
-once a player runs out of the zone, he/she is no longer safe until he/she makes it back to his/her own side, (or frees a player along the way)
-objects cannot be thrown out of the zone, otherwise the player is no longer safe.
-each player can only save another sitting team member at a time.
-when a player is saved, both players must come back to their own side before making their way to the zone again.
-players cannot "guard" other players within the range of 5ft. 10ft for each zone.
Variations:
-for older groups, use larger and odder objects. Ex: benches, hockey nets, mattresses, program directors, etc.
-plant a flag in each zone. The flag should be the last object a team brings back, when all other objects are retrieved. This will determine the end of the game.
