SOP-Jungle Swing

Jungle Swing
Standard Operating Procedure
The Jungle Swing has the potential to cause injury. Because of this, NLBC will train Summer Staff to follow the procedure outlined below.
1. Participants must wear a climbing harness. Harnesses must be fitted adjusted by trained personnel. Check:
• Location (waist belt above hips, buckles on outside of legs
• Fit (1 finger jamb at waist, 3 finger collapse at legs)
• Buckles doubled back (minimum 5 cm / 2” tail)
2. Only the Supervisor and 1 participant may be on the platform. All others must wait on the stairs.
3. Place the participant to the right of the opening with the guardrail in front. The operator will use their body to shield the camper from the opening.
4. PULL in the climbing rope. Be careful to keep the rope off the rail to prevent damage to the rail and / or rope.
5. UNCLIP the carbineer from the rope. This must be done prior to clipping the camper into the rope swing!
6. THROW the rope over the edge of the platform. This will ensure that the camper is really disconnected!
7. CLIP the safety leash to the participant’s harness. Check to see that the carbineer is locked.
8. Position the camper in front of the opening. Hold on to the camper’s harness to prevent them from jumping before you are ready to send them.
9. CHECK that the area below the swing is clear! Look both ways and call ‘ALL CLEAR!’ Ensure that SAWHORSES are blocking traffic.
10. Release the camper when they are ready. DO NOT force a camper to do this or any activity at camp.
Use of the Jungle Swing is
‘Challenge By Choice’.
NO ‘SUPERMAN’ FLIGHTS PERMITTED!
