THESE STUDIES ARE USEd FOR ALL AGES-TWEAKING NEEDED

Day Three –
Jesus to the Rescue

NOTE: For 5 day camps combine Day 3 with Day 4.

Objectives:

1) To explain that God sent his Son Jesus, to save us from the cost of our sin by his death and resurrection. Days 1 and 2 have been preparing kids to hear the salvation message. Day 2 did not include talking about Christ and salvation, so pray that the Holy Spirit has been convicting kids of their need for rescuing from their sin. Day 2 ended with the problem of sin, and this Bible study reveals what Christ has done to save us.

Lesson:

Bible References to know:
Everyone has sinned. Romans 3:23
The wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23
God demonstrates his love for us through Jesus. Romans 5:8
Jesus became sin for us. 1 Cor. 5:21
Jesus gave his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Through him we have eternal life. John 3:16

1) Review: Our predicament-sin.
Ask questions to review:
Who created everything?
What were we created for?
God made us and loves us. He made us to be in relationship with him, but something happened.
What happened?
Sin came into the world. Because God is perfect and holy, and we are imperfect and sinful, the relationship between God and us is broken.
Remind campers of the illustration you used to demonstrate sin on Day Two.

2) God’s Solution: Jesus
Why does someone become a hero? Ask campers to share some of their favorite heroes from movies. Why do people like the good guy? It’s because they needed saving, and he
saved them. The city is about to be blown up by aliens, and the hero stops them just in time. The girl is falling from the top of a building, and the hero catches her at the last second, just before she hits the ground. We needed saving from our sins, and Jesus was the one who came to save us.

Explain: God didn’t want us to be separated from him. He still loved us, even though we are sinful. He knew that we couldn’t solve the problem of sin on our own. So, he put a rescue plan into operation. He sent his Son, Jesus, to become a human and to live on earth.
What was Jesus like?
-Perfect, without sin.
-Powerful, had all God’s power.
-Loving.
-Real, lived in a real place at a specific time in history.

What did Jesus do? Explain that Jesus loved us so much that he died for us.
Substitution – Yesterday we learned that the punishment for our sin is death. Jesus decided to take our punishment for us: he died instead of us. Even though he was perfect and didn’t deserve to die, he chose to die to save us. That’s how much he loved us.

Ideas: Tell or read the story of Jesus’ death according to the gospels in a narrative way, making it exciting.

Staircase Illustration. If you used this illustration to explain sin, continue with it for this Bible study for the sake of consistency. Take the campers to the jungle swing stairs and review the illustration. Then carry a camper to the top of the stairs on your back. Explain how we can’t get to God on our own, but Jesus can take us there because of what he has done for us.

Bunk and Bridge Illustrations. Explain the illustration again to remind the campers. Carry a camper to the bunk representing God (heaven) on your back. Explain that we can’t get to God on our own, but Jesus can take us there because of what he has done for us.

Response:
Fixing the Broken Relationship
What has Christ’s death done for us?
a) Colossians 1:13 - rescued from sin (darkness).
b) 1 Peter 3:18 - reconciled with God. 1 Peter 3:18
c) Ephesians 2:4 - made alive in Christ
c) John 1:29 – taken away our sins.
d) Philippians 3:9 - made righteous in God’s eyes.
Have the campers share how they react to the story of Jesus’ death for them. Share your own response to his sacrifice (e.g. sorrow, thankfulness, conviction of your own sin, joy, etc.). Explain that what Christ has done needs a response. He offers us forgiveness and eternal life as a gift, but we have to choose take it. We have to want to be reconciled to God. We have to admit that we have sinned and ask him to forgive us.
Romans 10:9 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
End with questions about the material. Tell the campers that you are available to talk to them one-on-one if they have any questions about this that they want to ask.
