This is a cut and paste from when we first started to use low ropes.

Ropes Course

The ropes course is set up as a great tool for Leaders to get to know their cabin. There is a trick to most elements that make them much easier to do and it is a great test to see what kids will figure it out first, which kids lead, follow, or completely don’t care. This will give leaders a great pulse on their cabin and helps build cabin unity.

After the rose bowl dinner they get shoes (very important) and bug dope on. They line up in numerical cabin order in the parking lot. The spotting instructions are given there and then everyone will follow the Program Co-ordinator in to be dropped off at the different stations. Every 8 mins the bullhorn siren will go signalling that everyone is to rotate stations by going to the next number. Before the summer starts it is a good idea to see what signs have come down and need to be replaced.

1-triangle-start with everyone on one side of the hanging triangle. Every member has to get passed through without touching the sides of the triangle. Campers already spotting by moving members.
2-teeter-toter-get your entire cabin on the plank and get it balanced. If you need to stretch for time put uneven numbers on each side and get the campers to balance it, counsellors on one side and all the campers on the other side… make them up as you go. Trick is to only get one or two kids to do the balancing. No spotting required.
3.Spider Web-Start with everyone on one side and as you go through a hole it can no longer be used by anyone else. Get whole cabin through. No spotting required… cabin to involved moving members.
4.All Aboard-Get the entire cabin on one island without anyone touching the ground for longer than 10 seconds. Variations are only one foot or you must have both feet on, no hands…etc. No spotting required
5.Islands- Start with entire cabin on one island. You must go from island to island in a course using the wooden planks to cross. Variations like certain boards can only be moved four times, some islands can only hold a certain amount of people…etc. No spotting required.
6.Name Game/Camouflage-Spotting would be funny but not necessary.
7.Tire Throw-Get the tire on and then off three different ways. Nothing to Spot
8.-The Wall-Get your whole team up the wall. There can only be two people maximum at the top of the wall. So as one person climbs up another person who has been up for two turns climbs down. Good spotting required.
9.Postmans Walk-Starting with hips on the tree walk from one side to the other using the yellow rope. If campers are just flying through it only let them use one hand or one foot, eyes closed. Trick is to keep the rope at eye level and to keep moving. Good spotting required.
10.-Birthday Log-Campers get on in random order. When you say so they must get into order of their birthdays with December on one end and January on the other. If anyone touches the ground they must run down to the December end. This is the trick to it that they can just jump off in order of their birthdays. If they get in order but don’t get the trick get them to get in order without talking. No spotting.
11.-Aligator Pit-Start with everyone at one end and letting campers go one at a time they have to get from vine to vine. When first camper reaches the fourth or fifth rope the next camper can start. Cannot touch ground or must go to the end of the line. Trick is to never be on just one vine, if you have an appendage on the previous vine than you can get it swing by pumping back and forth. No spotting.
12.-V Traverse-Starting with hips on the trees two people start to move down the cables until they fall off. Trick is to keep butt sucked in, straighten out arms and lean equally on each other. Good spotting required on the outside and counsellor in the middle to make sure that no one falls into a cable.
13.Multi-Vine-Start with hips on the tree and go from vine to vine. Good spotting required.
14.Swinging Log-Start with hips on the tree and go from one end to the other. Trick is to go fast and not stand still for to long on it. Good Spotting required.
15.-Swinging Ladder-Starting with feet on the lowest rung of the rope ladder camper climbs until their hands can reach to the top rung. They then flip over and release the ladder. No Spotting, leader places hand over back and follows them up-when near the top the leader grabs the rope to make sure they don’t flip over to fast.
16.-The X-Starting with hips on the tree and only one rope in their hand camper goes from one end to the other. Half way across the camper switches ropes and continues to the end. Good spotting required.
17.Multi-Teeter-Toter-Start with everyone on one end and let them go one at a time all the way through. Next let them on one at a time but this time the first person stops at the end. Once everyone is on campers move back and fourth until it balances out and no one is touching the ground. If campers are pro get them to go one at a time and don’t let any of the planks touch the ground if there is someone on it. No Spotting required.

Spotting-Plant feet shoulder width apart, bend knees, hands at eye level with fingers and thumbs in (fingers will break if you try to catch anyone with just a finger). Eyes on the person doing the activity not hands on. You cannot be allowed on an element if you aren’t spotting well or if you are distracting. Certain elements are dangerous to spot so if noted above not to spot than do not allow kids to be to near during use.
