Keeping them entertained, when they're holding a rifle

Marshmallow Guns were a big hit this summer.
They helped to break up the monotony of shooting at targets, since you can shoot at each other. We set aside one day where Riflery Skill was just marshmallows. Some leaders held mini-wars (like a paintball field), while others sent their campers on missions to (kindly) disrupt other skills by ambushing them.

You need:
-up to 24" of 1/2" CPVC pipe (rigid, off-white colour, comes in 10ft lengths)
-two 'tees'
-two '90° elbows'
-two 'end caps'

How To Make:
without a diagram it may be difficult to explain.
-cut five 3" lengths of pipe.
-cut one 1.5" length
-cut one 6"+ length (for the barrel)
-sand edges of all pieces
-assemble gun (I'll try to post a diagram later)
-use CPVC cement at joints to avoid losing pieces
(I found by gluing the gun into three separable pieces, it avoided losing pieces, but allowed disassembling easier for storage
-spray paint gun(s) if desired

How to Use:
-use miniature marshmallows
-take one mallow, and roll between thumb and forefinger until elongated and squished a little to fit inside pipe
-insert into the back of gun (where your mouth will go)
-aim gun, and take a big breath
-put mouth on pipe, and blow one quick hard shot
-the mallow travels down through the gun, around the 90° angles, and out the barrel

Great fun, because they don't really hurt to get hit.
We had campers wear safety glasses 'just in case,' but there's not much danger, really.

Found this pic on the internet.
(hope it posts)

I found that a modification helped for ease of use:
-a smaller (like 1") piece of tube between the back handle and the first tee.
-a 3" piece of tube out the back of the top elbow.

This makes it so that your hand isn't touching your chin while you're holding it to your mouth.Games & Challenges Marshmallowshooter

Alright, I can't seem to make the image stuff work, so I'll just post a couple of URLs to visit. Hopefully these'll work instead.

If you get just the image address so the page is just the pic and usually ends with .jpg the put Games & Challenges infront of the address and after.

Yes. They are sweet.
hmm...honestly, no, I can't remember costs.
Seems to me that the pipe works about to about $1/ft...
...and the other accessories depended on where we bought them.
Pretty sure the whole thing clocked in at a little below 5 bucks a pop. Not super-cheap, but the kids have a BLAST with them.

A few pointers from 'learning the hard way':
-To avoid running around all over the place, call the store in advance and ask if they stock CPVC pipe. I stress the "C" because several stores said 'yes' and then only actually had 2"+ white pvc pipe. And you'd need a mighty-big marshmallow to make that work!
-ask which accessories (elbows, tees, caps) they carry, and how many they have in stock. I found that in Northern BC they are surprisingly understocked items.
-Don't cheap out on marshmallows. Apparently you pay for both deliciousness AND velocity. ($ store mallows are lame).
-A pipe cutter would speed up the process substantially, since you wouldn't have to sand each cut piece.
-DO glue at least some pieces together, to avoid losing them. I was really surprised at just how quickly several pieces and accessories walked away. (I'm talking a matter of minutes!) And if you don't have extra pieces, if you're down one piece, you're down a whole gun.
-DO use the pvc glue in an EXTREMELY well-ventilated area. Even outside, with a breeze, it tickled my gag reflex.
-hot, hot dish-washing water worked well for disinfecting the guns, but did a real number on the (oh-so-cool) spray-paint jobs. I'd suggest just bleach-water instead, though that might wreck them as well--not sure.
-Make sure you shake out as much water as possible after washing, then let dry in open-air completely. Nothing nastier than a moldy mallow gun.
-A note: If you leave the pipe straight, and don't shape it as a gun, we found the mallows actually went harder/further. But they don't have nearly the same visual appeal, and don't make the cool "thpunk!" sound that the guns do.

A couple other things:

-In the game "Safari" I gave our head-hunters the straight ones, as blow-dart guns. That went over really well. Except they're really accurate, and my headhunters were merciless, so a lot of 'Safari Rifles' were lost solely from those two.

-If you had a surplus of pieces and accessories (and didn't mind losing a good number of them), I think it would be fun to let the campers be creative, and build their own unique models, experimenting with length, angles, etc.
Our staff came up with a 'rifle' model, and also one that shot around corners.

ps: Thanks, Dave, for getting those pics to post.

I hate to sound like a clean freak but I do avoid stuff that other peoples lips have been near in the summer. Did you sanitize them at all? If so what did you do?

You sound like a clean freak Smile

Your standard dish-cleaning system should do a good job of sanitizing them, especially the mouthpieces. Also, it seems to me that if the guns are in smaller pieces, instead of the whole item (ie. three pieces), that there'd be more chances of the insides getting cleaned as well.
