SOP-jungle swing

Zip Line
Standard Operating Procedure

1. The Zip Line has the potential to cause injury. Because of this, NLBC will train Summer Staff to follow the procedure outlined below.

2. Participants must wear a climbing harness. Harnesses must be fitted adjusted by trained personnel. Check:
• Location (waist belt above hips, buckles on outside of legs
• Fit (1 finger jamb at waist, 3 finger collapse at legs)
• Buckles doubled back (minimum 5 cm / 2” tail)

3. Only the Supervisor and 1 participant may be on the platform. All others must wait on the ground.

4. Instruct the participant to stand on the elevated platform. The operator will position their body to shield the camper from the opening.

5. CLIP the safety leash to the pulley with a stainless steel carbineer.

6. SQUEEZE the carabineer to ensure that it is locked.

7. CHECK the participant’s harness. Is it properly fastened?

8. Position the camper in front of the opening. Hold on to the camper’s harness to prevent them from jumping before you are ready to send them.

9. CHECK that the zip line is clear! Whistle commands:
• Top of ride:
 one blast = All clear? (Wait for a response)
• Bottom of ride:
 one – ‘YES’ – ‘ALL CLEAR’
• one blast (Here she comes!)

• Top of ride:
 one blast = All clear? (Wait for a response)
• Bottom of ride:
 two – ‘NO’ – ‘DO NOT SEND’
• two blasts (I’ll wait!)

10. Release the camper when they are ready. DO NOT force a camper to do this or any activity.

Use of the Zip Line is
‘Challenge By Choice’.
